burn injuries

Exploding Firepot Lawyers

Between April 3, 2010 and September 1, 2011, two people died and 86 people suffered injuries, according to the CPSC.  Many of the victims suffered severe burn injuries and half of the victims required hospitalization.

Firepots have been a popular decorative item used both indoors and out, but serious injuries continue to be reported.  An explosion can occur when gel fuel is poured into the center well while a flame is still burning.  Sometimes it appears that the flame has gone out, however, when you pour more flammable gel into the burning well, you are essentially pouring gasoline on a fire.

To make matters worse, the gel fuel explodes and frequently splatters on the user.  It is thick and jelly-like and therefore sticks to skin and clothing.  The burning fuel is difficult to extinguish, allowing burns to become more severe.

This step-by-step diagram from the CPSC shows how firepot explosions most likely occur:

Several manufacturers and retailers have stopped selling the firepots, but thousands of people still have them in their homes.  Many are unaware of the dangers until a tragic accident happens.
