Inserted into patients to help cope with the pain that often follows arthroscopic shoulder surgery, pain pumps have been linked to Postarthroscopic Glenohumeral Chondrolysis (PAGLC), an extremely painful condition in which the cartilage located within the shoulder joint begins to deteriorate. This can result in a life-long disability.
Specific symptoms following surgery can include:
- Shoulder pain whether in motion or at rest
- Clicking, popping or grinding of the shoulder
- Shoulder stiffness or weakness
- Decreased range of motion
According to a 2006 study by the American Academy of Orthodpedic Surgeons, PAGCL is one of the most common complications following shoulder surgeries.
