Recall: Jeep Grand Cherokees and Libertys Due To Possibility Of Catching Fire

Chrysler has recalled 1.6 million Jeeps due to a high risk of catching fire when hit from behind. With the gas tanks located in the “crush zone,” a rear impact crash is more likely to cause the cars to catch fire as the fuel tank is punctured.  The most-publicized deaths have been in fires following rear-end crashes by another vehicle traveling at highway speeds crashing into the back of a Jeep that was stopped or moving slowly.

Vehicles being recalled include:

  • 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty SUV

Unfortunately, Chrysler won’t have to repair all Jeeps that were originally considered unsafe. Initially, 2.7 million Jeeps were slated for recall, however that number has been reduced.

Some vehicles are being handled as a “service action.”  Roughly 1.2 million Grand Cherokees from model years 1999 to 2004 will be inspected.  If they have an aftermarket trailer hitch, it will be replaced with a factory trailer hitch designed to minimize fire risk.

The remaining 1.56 million vehicles are 1993 to 1998 Grand Cherokees and 2002 to 2007 Libertys. Chrysler said it will do work on these.  Cars that have a factory-installed hitch will not have work done while those with an after-market hitch will be replaced with a factory trailer hitch.
The rear-impact crashes and subsequent fires are reminiscent of Ford Pinto problems in the 1970s.  Watch a crash test:  1971 Chevrolet Impala Vs. 1972 Ford Pinto Full-Rear Impact.
