The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a voluntary recall of Tassimo Single-Cup Coffee Brewers and Tassimo Espresso T Discs due to burn hazards. About 835,000 coffee makers in the United States and an additional 900,000 in Canada are being recalled, as well as approximately 2.1 million packages of coffee in the U.S and an additional 1.9 million in Canada.
The plastic disc, also called a T Disc, which holds the coffee or tea can burst, spraying hot liquid and coffee grounds or tea leaves. The coffee machine operator and innocent bystanders can be burned by the boiling liquid.
There have been more than 140 reports of instances where the plastic T Disc burst and sprayed hot liquid, coffee grounds or tea leaves onto consumers. Of those 140, 37 reports were of second-degree burn injuries. One injury involved a 10-year-old Minnesota girl who received second-degree burns to her neck and face and had to be hospitalized. Another incident involved 2-year-old girl from Canada who also received second-degree burns to her face.
