Yasmin and Yaz, produced by Bayer Healthcare, and the generic version Ocella, distributed by Barr Laboratories, Inc., are three birth control pills that contain a new progestin, called drospirenone, which can produce a variety of serious side effects.
Drospirenone can act as a diuretic, causing dehydration that can result in kidney stones and gallbladder disease. It can also lead to dangerous increases of potassium in the blood stream. Since potassium acts as a key control in cardiac rhythm, this imbalance can cause hyperkalemia and heart rhythm disturbances, resulting in blood clots, stroke, heart attack, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, and even death.
Between 2004 and 2008, the FDA received reports of 50 deaths from the use of Yasmin and Yaz, even in women as young as 17 years old.
If you or a loved one has suffered any serious effects from taking the birth control pills Yasmin, Yaz, or Ocella, you might be able to file a claim for damages. Please feel free to contact us if you would like to discuss whether you can make a claim. We do not charge anything for the initial consultation.
