The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of almost 1 million Roman shades and roller blinds due to strangulation risks effecting small children.
Strangulation can occur when a child’s neck becomes tangled in the inner core of the shades or exposed blind loops.
So far, one death from strangulation has been reported, as well as cases of adults rescuing infants and children after becoming entangled. No permanent injuries have been reported.
The specifc brands involved in the recall include
533,000 ISDANS, TUPPLUR and ENJE roller blinds sold by IKEA Home Furnishings of Conshohocken, Pa. between July 2005 and July 2009. Owners of IKEA blinds should check to make sure the tension device is properly installed. If it is not, they can call 888-966-4532 or visit an IKEA store for a free repair kit, available the second week of November.
90,000 suede Roman shades imported and sold by Hanover Direct Inc. of Weehawken, N.J. , also known as Domestications. The shades were sold through the company’s Web site and catalog between January 2004 and December 2008.

364,000 Dublin Energy Solution Roman shades imported by Louis Hornick & Co. Inc. of New York, N.Y and sold exclusively by Bed Bath& Beyond between August 2007 and September 2009. Blind owners should contact Louis Hornick & Co. at 800-517-3612 for a free repair kit, which will be available by the end of November.
