The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a new app called SaferCar.

This app is designed to help consumers know when their vehicle has a recall, making our roads safer for all of us. Can you imagine driving on a road where all cars are at their peak performance?

How does it work?

  1. Download the app for free on the Google Play Store and the Apple Store
  2. Add your vehicle
  3. Add your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)
  4. Add additional items: car seats, tires, and equipment

According to the NHTSA, 1 in 4 vehicles has an unrepaired recall. Information is key in this matter, knowing about the recall proves to be an obstacle for most owners.

This is an easy and free way to stay informed about all your cars and most of the items in your cars. Smartphones are in almost everyone’s hands and apps are the way to reach millions of people most effectively at the same time.

Your VIN number is in two easily accessible places in your car. 1. At the base of your windshield on the driver side. 2. Open your driver’s side door and on the doorpost.

You can add additional items to the SaferCar app to receive notifications of recalls, investigations, or complaints. You can add things such as tires, car seats, trailer hitches, and other equipment.

While shopping for a new/used vehicle, you can check the app before you buy to ensure you are buying the safest car possible.

Millions of recalls are issued annually, 53 million vehicles, car seats, tires, and equipment were recalled in 2019, 35 million recalls in 2018, and 42 million recalls in 2017.

What Do I Do Once There is A Recall?

The app will recommend local dealerships handling vehicle repairs, so you can quickly make an appointment and get it fixed for free. In the app, you can check that a recall has been resolved.

This will be tracked with your VIN number and will show a green checkmark in your app to show that the recall has been completed. Any pending recalls will have a red exclamation point next to the recall.
